Follow these simple steps to ensure your coffee tastes great every time.
Step 1: Heat Your Water
Boil fresh water and let it cool slightly. Water that’s too hot can burn the coffee, creating a bitter taste. Aim for water just off the boil, around 195–205°F (90–96°C).
Step 2: Measure Your Coffee Grounds
For a balanced flavor, use 1–2 tablespoons of coffee grounds for every 8 ounces (1 cup) of water. Adjust according to your taste preference—more grounds for a stronger brew and less for a lighter flavor.
Step 3: Add Coffee Grounds to the Mug
Place the measured coffee grounds directly into your mug. Make sure the grind is medium to coarse; fine grounds can make the coffee too bitter and harder to strain.
Step 4: Pour Hot Water Over the Coffee Grounds
Slowly pour the hot water over the coffee grounds in the mug. Pour in a circular motion to evenly saturate the coffee.
Step 5: Stir and Let It Steep
Use a spoon to gently stir the coffee grounds and water mixture. This helps release the flavors and ensures even extraction.
- Let the coffee steep for 4–5 minutes. This steeping time allows the water to fully extract the flavors from the coffee grounds.
Step 6: Strain or Filter (Optional)
If you prefer a clean cup with no coffee grounds, you can strain the brewed coffee:
- Place a fine-mesh strainer or filter over another mug.
- Pour the coffee through the strainer to remove the grounds.
- If you don’t mind a few grounds in your mug, you can skip this step.
Step 7: Enjoy Your Coffee
Your freshly brewed coffee is now ready! Add milk, sugar, or any preferred flavorings, and enjoy it hot.
