The Future is Folding, A Look at 2024’s Bendable Phone Lineup
The Galaxy Z Flip Flips the Script
When it comes to Folding, no brand looms larger than Samsung. The tech titan has been pioneering the folding frontier for years now with its genre-defining Galaxy Z lineup. Their vertically folding “flip” models like the Z Flip 4 were among the first hits to prove this wild form factor could be elegant and consumer-friendly.
The Galaxy Z Flip 5
For 2024, Samsung is expected to unleash its next iterative marvel: the Galaxy Z Flip 5. Leaked renders tease an even more pocketable, ultra-slim design when folded, with narrower bezels allowing for a slightly bigger 6.7″ display in its unfolded tablet mode. Thanks to a new generation of foldable glass dubbed “Ironflexed”, the interior foldable display could bring unprecedented durability while remaining featherlight.
Rumored for a serious upgrad
The cover screen is rumored for a serious upgrade too, swelling to nearly 4 inches for the first time. This expanded exterior viewfinder would open up new usability for quickly previewing notifications, snapping selfies, and running lite apps without unfurling the whole device. Under the hood, you can count on pure flagship power from the latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor backed by gobs of RAM.

Perhaps the most tantalizing morsel is talk of a drastically improved camera system.
The Z Flip 5 may finally cross the Rubicon into mobile photography’s big leagues by rocking a 50MP main shooter elevated by premium optics and sensor tech trickled down from the Galaxy S line. Serious photographers may finally have a foldable to get excited about.
For those who like things a little bigger and badder
Samsung is also tipped to be cooking up a Galaxy Z Flip 5 Pro variant with an even larger outer display pushing 6 inches. This could provide a near-tablet experience without unfolding, ideal for tasks like mobile gaming and watching video hands-free.
Shape-shifting trick
Overall, the Z Flip 5 seems poised to build on its predecessor’s promise as the mainstream’s most accessible entry point to foldable futurism, now with meaningful upgrades in display tech, imaging prowess and practical usability for its shape-shifting trick.
The Fold Pulls a Double Duty
While Samsung’s flipping wonders have transfixed the world with their stylish versatility, it’s the company’s horizontally folding Galaxy Z Fold series that represents the true bleeding edge of foldable ambition. With their massive unfolded displays, this imposing form factor flirts with tablet and even micro-laptop territory.
Leaks suggest 2024’s Galaxy Z
Leaks suggest 2024’s Galaxy Z Fold 6 will indeed embrace this multi-purpose desktop vision with a spacious 7.6″ interior display. However, Samsung may finally refresh the front cover screen’s squarer aspect ratio to a more modern 20:9 window clocking in around 6.4″. This should enhance productivity and multimedia consumption without unfurling the device.
Under the surface
you can expect Z Fold 6 to flex some serious muscle by inheriting the premium Snapdragon silicon and abundant RAM counts from the Galaxy S24 lineup. But the real intrigue surrounds whispers of an available 200MP rear camera module, having trickled from the Ultra flagships all the way to Samsung’s foldable spearhead. If true, this outrageous megapixel count would cement Z Fold 6 as the foldable camera king while bringing ultrasharp video recording and crispy digital cropping into the equation.
Speaking of video
Samsung could bring cinematic videography to the literal fold via rumored enhanced video optimization for foldable formats. Think seamless transitions for presenting traditional and ultra-widescreen aspect ratios within the same filmmaking interface. Such clever display optimization would be nothing new for Samsung, which has been among the most innovative brands for enhancing productivity across multiple screen surfaces.
At the ultra-premium extreme
An even grander “Galaxy Z Fold 6 Ultra” is rumored for the deepest of pockets. Key details remain scarce, but a name like Ultra implies taking the hardware and novel folding experiences to the absolute apex with no compromises. Think: brighter screens, more RAM than you can shake a stylus at, plus superlative cameras and battery life eclipsing any foldable yet.
Standard Z Fold 6
While the standard Z Fold 6 is virtually guaranteed for an August unveiling following Samsung’s typical release cadence, an Ultra edition could potentially debut sooner to steal the Paris Olympics spotlight. Whenever they land, Samsung’s next Fold devices are sure to send shockwaves through the mobile industry with their sheer foldable opulence.
The Google Pixel Fold Unfurls Again
The foldable arena is poised to receive a jolt of fresh energy this year in the form of Google’s second stab at their homegrown folding phone. Last year’s original Pixel Fold offered a compelling glimpse at Google’s vision for foldable software and services, but it was ultimately hampered by some quirks and compromises born from Google’s relative inexperience at crafting folding hardware.
Now Google has had a full lap
Now Google has had a full lap around the track, and the Pixel Fold 2 is rumored to land as a seriously refined sophomore effort. Leaked renders flaunt svelte new industrial design inspired by the mainstream Pixel 8 series. Gone is the thick, protruding camera bump of the original Fold. In its place is a sleeker horizontal visor hosting the triple rear cam system.
The Fold 2 looks
The Fold 2 looks noticeably more uniform and symmetrical in its folded book-style stance compared to its predecessor’s tapered, off-kilter hinge. And when unfurled, its internal display is tipped for a subtle increase to 7.9″ of usable screen real estate while sticking true to the soft rounded display curves that distinguished the original model.
AI processing upgrades
We’re also expecting some significant spec bumps including Google’s latest Tensor G4 system-on-chip taking the reins (which could yield major AI processing upgrades), plus faster RAM/storage combos and a bigger battery. However, the real star of the show might be software: Google’s unrivaled AI and machine learning savvy tuning the Pixel Fold 2’s Android experience for flawless foldable fluidity across every menu, app, and multi-window workflow. This leap in science & technology promises a game-changing device experience.
Dual-screen setup
Other noteworthy rumored enhancements for the Pixel Fold 2 include an upgraded rear camera with boosted optical zoom plus an upgraded front camera maneuvered below the display panel for a cleaner, more immersive foldable screen. We’re keeping our fingers crossed that Google could also address our biggest qualm with the original Fold, which was its subpar battery endurance unable to keep up with that thirsty dual-screen setup.
All of these enticing refinements are tipped to come in a more price-conscious package
potentially starting as low as $1100 – a far cry from the first Fold’s ultra-premium sticker shock territory. With a rumored May launch date in the crosshairs, the Pixel Fold 2 looks poised to turbocharge Google’s foldable fight against Samsung with a refined take on smartphone/tablet convergence backed by pure Google smarts.
OnePlus Open 2: Flagship Flexing
Speaking of fierce Samsung foldable fighters entering their second rounds, OnePlus is widely expected to unveil a sequel to last year’s surprisingly solid Open folding phone. Details remain scarce on the Open 2, but we can reasonably expect some significant upgrades to help this cutting-edge handset punch harder against the mainstream folding juggernauts.
Foldable AMOLED panel
The original OnePlus Open carved out a niche for itself with an elegant yet durable spiral hinge design that folded vertically like the Galaxy Z Flip series. It turned heads with its crisp 7.8″ foldable AMOLED panel and capable Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chip, plus versatile triple camera array headlined by a 50MP main shooter. However, quirks like mediocre battery life and missing an official IP rating for dust/water resistance held it back from true flagship glory.
For the Open 2
We’re anticipating that OnePlus will double down on refining. Those few lingering flaws rather than going back to the drawing board. Borrowing more processing muscle from the company’s latest mainstream flagships. Like the OnePlus 11 series seems inevitable, so we’d expect at minimum the newer Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip taking charge. A bigger battery in the 4500-5000mAh range feels like a no-brainer too.
Affordable pricing
More exciting would be the prospect of an even larger foldable display pushing into the 8-inch tablet territory. Combined with slimmer bezels and lighter overall chassis engineering. We’re hoping OnePlus can maintain the Open line’s characteristically affordable pricing. Even if it means skimping a bit on superfluous ultra-premium niceties.
Lightweight
While not eclipsing Samsung’s foldable glory, the original Open proved itself a lightweight yet durable daily driver. Assuming OnePlus can maintain that pragmatic formula while elevating the core user experience. Addressing lingering pitfalls, the Open 2 could make for an enticing foldable flagship to consider from the value-forward brand.
Moto’s Iconic Folding Razrs Get An Upgrade
When Motorola revived its iconic Razr brand for the foldable era a few years back. It made waves by elegantly translating that classic compact flip-phone physicality to the foldable form factor. The latest Razr Plus built on that clever execution with upgraded durability and performance, establishing Motorola’s foldable bona fides.
For 2024
Motorola is fully expected to drop a fresh iteration for its foldable flagship. Razr Plus series that improves on its predecessor in the typical areas. Processing power, camera capabilities, display quality and battery stamina. But the real magic will likely come through Motorola’s customary focus on svelte engineering and intelligent software. Optimizations catered to its novel foldable format.
Razr Plus
Last year’s Razr Plus impressed by squeezing flagship specs into an amazingly compact frame. With clever display continuity enabling full-screen multitasking. Motorola is sure to double down on enhancing this seamless foldable device experience centered on ultra-portability and effortless handsfree usability.
We could see the Razr Plus’ already massive cover screen grow slightly larger
Minimizing the need to unfurl the device. And moving interior components like selfie cameras beneath the foldable panel could help maximize that precious interior display real estate. Of course, spec bumps like the latest Snapdragon silicon and more RAM/storage never hurt anyone either.
In the imaging department
Motorola would be wise to prioritize more megapixels. Superior optics and low-light performance to help future Razr Plus cameras ascend into the big leagues. That was arguably the Achilles heel of the 2023 Razr Plus.
Alongside its flagship foldable
we’re also expecting a relatively minor refresh to Motorola’s more affordable vanilla Razr in 2024. This scrappy little flip phone was an underrated gem for its sleek form factor and solid. Mid-range performance at a reasonable price point. Reliable leaks suggest no seismic shifts for the 2024 Razr. But typical annual spec boosts like a newer chipset and bigger cover screen are likely in store.
While Samsung and Google flex their might at the ultra-premium folding tier. Motorola continues upholding its reputation for stylish, user-friendly takes on foldable tech across the value spectrum. Its flexible Razr clan could cement this reputation further in 2024 through clever iterative optimizations.
