OnePlus Open 2: Flagship Flexing

Speaking of fierce Samsung foldable fighters entering their second rounds, OnePlus is widely expected to unveil a sequel to last year’s surprisingly solid Open folding phone. Details remain scarce on the Open 2, but we can reasonably expect some significant upgrades to help this cutting-edge handset punch harder against the mainstream folding juggernauts.

 

Foldable AMOLED panel

The original OnePlus Open carved out a niche for itself with an elegant yet durable spiral hinge design that folded vertically like the Galaxy Z Flip series. It turned heads with its crisp 7.8″ foldable AMOLED panel and capable Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chip, plus versatile triple camera array headlined by a 50MP main shooter. However, quirks like mediocre battery life and missing an official IP rating for dust/water resistance held it back from true flagship glory.

For the Open 2

We’re anticipating that OnePlus will double down on refining. Those few lingering flaws rather than going back to the drawing board. Borrowing more processing muscle from the company’s latest mainstream flagships. Like the OnePlus 11 series seems inevitable, so we’d expect at minimum the newer Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip taking charge. A bigger battery in the 4500-5000mAh range feels like a no-brainer too.

 

Affordable pricing

More exciting would be the prospect of an even larger foldable display pushing into the 8-inch tablet territory. Combined with slimmer bezels and lighter overall chassis engineering. We’re hoping OnePlus can maintain the Open line’s characteristically affordable pricing. Even if it means skimping a bit on superfluous ultra-premium niceties.

 

Lightweight

While not eclipsing Samsung’s foldable glory, the original Open proved itself a lightweight yet durable daily driver. Assuming OnePlus can maintain that pragmatic formula while elevating the core user experience. Addressing lingering pitfalls, the Open 2 could make for an enticing foldable flagship to consider from the value-forward brand.

 

Moto’s Iconic Folding Razrs Get An Upgrade

When Motorola revived its iconic Razr brand for the foldable era a few years back. It made waves by elegantly translating that classic compact flip-phone physicality to the foldable form factor. The latest Razr Plus built on that clever execution with upgraded durability and performance, establishing Motorola’s foldable bona fides. 

 

For 2024

Motorola is fully expected to drop a fresh iteration for its foldable flagship. Razr Plus series that improves on its predecessor in the typical areas. Processing power, camera capabilities, display quality and battery stamina. But the real magic will likely come through Motorola’s customary focus on svelte engineering and intelligent software. Optimizations catered to its novel foldable format.

 

Razr Plus

Last year’s Razr Plus impressed by squeezing flagship specs into an amazingly compact frame. With clever display continuity enabling full-screen multitasking. Motorola is sure to double down on enhancing this seamless foldable device experience centered on ultra-portability and effortless handsfree usability.

 

We could see the Razr Plus’ already massive cover screen grow slightly larger

Minimizing the need to unfurl the device. And moving interior components like selfie cameras beneath the foldable panel could help maximize that precious interior display real estate. Of course, spec bumps like the latest Snapdragon silicon and more RAM/storage never hurt anyone either.  

 

In the imaging department

Motorola would be wise to prioritize more megapixels. Superior optics and low-light performance to help future Razr Plus cameras ascend into the big leagues. That was arguably the Achilles heel of the 2023 Razr Plus.

Alongside its flagship foldable

we’re also expecting a relatively minor refresh to Motorola’s more affordable vanilla Razr in 2024. This scrappy little flip phone was an underrated gem for its sleek form factor and solid. Mid-range performance at a reasonable price point. Reliable leaks suggest no seismic shifts for the 2024 Razr. But typical annual spec boosts like a newer chipset and bigger cover screen are likely in store.

 

While Samsung and Google flex their might at the ultra-premium folding tier. Motorola continues upholding its reputation for stylish, user-friendly takes on foldable tech across the value spectrum. Its flexible Razr clan could cement this reputation further in 2024 through clever iterative optimizations.
